On Saturday, April 25, participants in the Global Teachers–Southern Africa 2026 program gathered in Cary, North Carolina, for a full-day orientation ahead of their upcoming travels this June.

The orientation brought together two groups totaling 56 educators from across North Carolina. Group 1 will travel June 16–27, 2026, while Group 2 will travel June 23–July 4, 2026.
Throughout the day, participants built connections with fellow educators, reviewed travel logistics and health and safety information, participated in a cultural competency workshop, and engaged in curriculum planning activities designed to help translate their international experiences into meaningful classroom learning opportunities.
In preparation for the program, participants have also taken part in a series of virtual learning sessions exploring the history and culture of Southern Africa, as well as the long-standing partnerships between North Carolina, Zambia, and Botswana. A final virtual session later this month will focus on conservation and education in the region.
Following the program, each participant will develop a lesson plan or educational project to share their experiences and learning with students, schools, and local communities across North Carolina.
