Global Teachers – South Korea 2024
Day 6: Thursday, June 20
The day began with a visit to The Discovery Center for Science and Technology for Young Scientists Hanyang University, where the delegation was captivated by a presentation by Dr. Junghoon Choi on interdisciplinary STEM education and the implementation of STEM education across South Korea.
After the presentation and lunch, the group headed to 1Million Studio, where they learned a K-pop dance routine. Following the class, they only had time for a short break and change of wardrobe before heading to cooking class to learn to make Bibimbap and Bulgogi.

“As part of the Go Global NC Professional Development Program, we embarked on a journey through innovation and culture in South Korea, visiting three distinct organizations that left a lasting impression on our perspectives as educators. Each stop provided unique insights into the dynamic landscape of South Korean education and cultural heritage, offering exciting possibilities for integration into our curriculum and classroom experiences.
Our first visit to the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Creativity showcased South Korea’s remarkable transformation from a predominantly rural, agriculture-based society into a global technological powerhouse. Over the past half-century, the integration of human and social sciences into STEM education has been pivotal in fostering creativity and innovation among students.
One of the most compelling lessons from this visit was the emphasis on both integrative and convergence abilities in science education. While integrative abilities, such as critical thinking and problem-solving, are universally valued, South Korea’s focus on convergence abilities—bringing together diverse disciplines to innovate solutions—stood out. This approach not only prepares students for the complexities of modern scientific challenges but also cultivates a mindset that is essential in a rapidly evolving global landscape.
The passion for science education at the Korea Foundation was palpable, and the resources shared were invaluable. As educators, we are excited to integrate these insights into our teaching, emphasizing not just technical skills but also the interdisciplinary thinking that fuels innovation.
Our next stop took us into the heart of South Korea’s vibrant K-pop culture at 1 Million Dance Studio. Here, we had the exhilarating opportunity to participate in a K-pop dance class led by a patient and energetic instructor. Learning the basic steps of K-pop dance was both challenging and invigorating, offering a firsthand experience of a cultural phenomenon that has captivated global audiences.
Beyond the dance moves, the visit to 1 Million Dance Studio underscored the power of cultural exchange in education. K-pop serves as a gateway to explore various aspects of Korean culture—music, fashion, and entertainment—which can enrich our curriculum with engaging and relevant content. By integrating elements of K-pop into our lessons, we can connect with students on a cultural level while promoting creativity and self-expression.
Our final destination, “Now Cooking” in Seoul, provided a hands-on experience in South Korean cuisine. Guided by a local chef, we immersed ourselves in the ingredients and techniques of traditional Korean cooking, enjoying an authentic home-cooking experience that highlighted the rich flavors and culinary heritage of the country.
This culinary adventure was more than just a meal—it was a lesson in cultural appreciation and understanding. Exploring South Korean cuisine offers myriad opportunities to incorporate cross-cultural learning into our classrooms. By exploring food traditions, students can gain insights into geography, history, and cultural values, fostering a global perspective that transcends.
Reflecting on our day with Go Global NC, the experiences at these three organizations have left us inspired and eager to enrich our curriculum with global perspectives. Integrating South Korea’s emphasis on creativity in STEM education, the cultural immersion through K-pop, and the culinary delights of Korean cuisine can ignite curiosity and broaden the horizons of our students.
By incorporating these experiences into our teaching, we aim to cultivate not only knowledge but also empathy and cultural competence among our students. Understanding South Korea’s journey from agricultural roots to technological innovation, experiencing the energy of K-pop, and savoring the flavors of Korean cuisine all contribute to a more comprehensive educational experience that prepares students for a globally interconnected world.
As educators committed to lifelong learning, we are excited to share these insights with our students, fostering a deeper appreciation for diversity and innovation. The lessons learned from our day with Go Global NC will undoubtedly shape our approach to education, equipping our students with the skills and perspectives needed to thrive in an increasingly complex and interconnected global society.
