Global Teachers – Chile 2023

Day 1: Friday, June 16

Following a long night of travel, including a flight delay on the tarmac in Miami, the Global Teachers-Chile 2023 delegation were all smiles as they walked out of the airport into Santiago and were welcomed by the Austral Group staff.

Everyone took in the views of Santiago as the bus took them to the hotel to settle in before a welcome orientation and presentation from Balloon Latam; an organization dedicated to reducing wealth inequality through sustainable entrepreneurship.

The day concluded with a delicious dinner at Civico Las Condes.

The different types of emotions I experienced today were nothing short of amazing! First off, I would like to say that this was my very first time on an airplane! Yes! Can you believe that? The airport experience was exciting, scary and tiring all at the same time. When I first stepped onto the very first flight of my entire 36 years of life I smelled the calming scent of cleaning supplies. Nothing too heavy but just the right amount to let me know that they cleaned the aircraft before we boarded. Major plus with me with everything that’s going on with COVID. It was very easy for me to locate my seat! When we began to take off, I was very nervous. My palms were sweaty, my heart was pounding in my chest, and I began to get a little dizzy looking out the window watching how fast different things zoomed by., As we took off, I finally opened my eyes and could feel us going higher and higher in the sky. When I looked out the window the houses looked like pieces from a monopoly game.

Stepping outside the airport in Santiago, Chile was surreal for me. I never would have imagined that this would be the first place I got to visit outside of the USA. Yes! You heard me! My very first out of country experience was to Santiago, Chile! The air was much sharper which was in part to the fact that the elevation was higher. It was a little chilly, but we were prepared because it was winter time. My first day here was great! We got checked into the hotel and settled in. When it was time for dinner, we dined at a place called Civico Las Condes! Oh, My Goodness! The food was amazing! The Salmon and potatoes were amazing paired with the wine! We really enjoyed dinner, and it was just the beginning of an amazing experience in Santiago, Chile.”
