April 2024

NC Assistant Commissioner of Agriculture Kaleb Rathbone and Legislative Liaison Cameron Dawson find NC sweetpotatoes in a grocery store in the Netherlands! They were participating on our Global Leaders program in March. Here’s the story of why sweetpotato is one word.

Your Donations Doubled Now!

We depend on you to be able to connect North Carolina and the World! Your donation – if you are a new donor or haven’t given in 18 months – is doubled through May 31st. Please give so that we can earn a $35,000 challenge grant from The Anonymous Trust. It’s all or nothing: if you collectively give $35,000, it becomes $70,000! Please help us reach our target.

Ag Innovation: Learning from the Netherlands

Our 25 Global Leaders learned so much and made important AgTech connections during our program to the Netherlands in March. We can’t wait to learn how our Western NC industry leaders will use what they learned to open doors for increased NC exports and innovative water management techniques.

Thank You to Our Global Leadership Sponsors!

Our successful Global Leaders program to the Netherlands last month would not have been possible without generous sponsorship from so many champions! A BIG thank you to our 2024 Global Leaders sponsors: Farm Bureau North Carolina; AgCarolina Farm Credit; AgSouth Farm Credit; NC Electric Cooperatives; NC Department of Agriculture; and the Dogwood Health Trust.

13 Low-Wealth Counties Join Global Teachers

We are thrilled to announce that 13 low-wealth counties have signed on with our Global Teachers Fellowship! A teacher from each of these counties will travel on our global program every year, in perpetuity. This opportunity is made possible by $1 million in State funding to be used as matching funds for Tier 1 and 2 counties. Never has access to our brand of global education been available to so many diverse communities across our state.

Getting Ready for South Korea!

Our 2024 Global Teachers Fellowship travels to South Korea this summer. Later this month our teachers will gather for an in-depth orientation to learn about this fascinating country’s academic achievement, environmental stewardship, and varied cultures. This will be our Global Teachers first journey to South Korea. We can’t wait!

NC Teacher of the Year to Join Global Teachers Netherlands

Congratulations, 2024 Burroughs Wellcome Fund NC Teacher of the Year (TOY) Heather Smith! Heather, a Haywood County math teacher, will represent and advocate for NC teachers over the coming year. As part of her TOY experience, Heather will join our Global Teachers Fellowship with a study program to the Netherlands.
