William “Bill” C. Harrison

Former Chairman, North Carolina State Board of Education

Dr. William “Bill” C. Harrison is professional educator with a strong history in education leadership. He served as the chairperson for the North Carolina State Board of Education, which sets policy for the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, from 2009 – 2013. 

He also served as the Governor’s Advisor for Education Transformation, and chairperson of the Governor’s Education Transformation Commission.

Dr. Harrison is currently a senior education advisor to Participate Learning and an education leadership consultant. Previously, he served as the superintendent to North Carolina school systems including Alamance-Burlington, Cumberland County, Hoke County, and Orange County. He served as the assistant superintendent in Brunswick County, and he has been a principal and teacher.

Dr. Harrison was inducted into East Carolina’s College of Education Educators Hall of Fame in 2010 for being a “visionary thinker, dedicated educator, and decisive leader who sees infinite possibilities in the eyes of all children and who works tirelessly to protect their right to the promise of education.” He was the Regional Superintendent of the Year in 2006, honored with the Excellence in Educational Leadership Award in 2007 and 2008, and recipient of the Jay Robinson Leadership Award in 2008.
